TOGETHER
THANK YOU FRONT-LINE WORKERS!
It is in times like these, that the work of organizations like Ascentria is more important than ever. Our work would not be possible if not for the generous support of donors like yourself. You make it possible that teen moms receive the mentoring and shelter they need. You ensure that new Americans have access to the support needed as they assimilate into their new home. You make certain that hundreds of elderly and disabled receive daily care and companionship.
Alexis de Tocqueville famously observed that the strength of America was in citizens engaging with local and national issues. We were a nation of joiners and that joining together made us all stronger. Thank You for joining together with us in supporting our neighbors. Your support reminds us all of what is good in America. Please know that you are a valued member of the Ascentria family and make a lasting impact on the lives of the individuals we serve each and every day.
Thank you,
Angela Bovill, President and CEO
Bill Mayo, Board Chair
A LETTER FROM OUR CEO AND BOARD CHAIR
As we reflect back on this past year, it cannot be denied that it was extremely emotional in so many ways. We were, and still are, a nation coping with a pandemic, struggling with racial inequity, and dealing with political divisiveness.
We’ve felt fear, despair, and uncertainty. But we are also starting to see new possibilities. Possibilities in new conversations, new commitment to change, and not just “returning to normal” but building a new, more equitable, more compassionate, more sustainable future.
These challenges have also shed light on our resiliency. Front-line workers bravely continue to provide vital services; a world-wide effort of innovation resulted in vaccines; a dialogue about how to address systemic racism is bringing about real change and we see acts of human kindness and support all around us.
Angela Bovill, President and CEO
While these are the words of our President and CEO Angela Bovill, she speaks for all of Ascentria Care Alliance
Today my message is to one group of people – the ones who do the work. Thank you. Thank you for your dedication, your commitment, and your personal sacrifices that you make every day to do this work. And right now, when the stakes are really high, you still do it.
You alone give us that glimmer of hope that while today might be dark, tomorrow will indeed be better. We will rise again and be better than we were before. So, thank you for all that you do – today and every day.”
THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!
Our work would not be possible without you.

HOW YOU'VE HELPED THIS YEAR
Donors Become Heroes During End-Of-Year Appeal
During our 2020 year-end appeal, we asked you to “follow your heart” and donate to the Ascentria program which best reflects your passion to help. And follow you did!
Thanks to your incredible support, we raised $362,000 during our end-of-year fundraising efforts! You made it possible for New Englanders in need to receive vital support during the pandemic crisis and beyond. Here is some of your impact on New England communities:
And so much more! Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
SERVICES FOR REFUGEES AND IMMIGRANTS
Nothing Can Hold Chantale Back
Ascentria wishes to congratulate one of our very own Unaccompanied Refugee Minors Program foster youth, Chantale Zuzi, for recently being recognized as a young leader! Chantale was recently awarded the Meridith D. Wesby Young Leader Award by the Women’s Initiative of the United Way of Central Massachusetts. This award recognizes Chatale's commitment and dedication to leadership and volunteering in her community and beyond.
Chantale earned this award through her volunteer work as a senior fellow of students and alumni relations with RefuSHE, the very program which served Chantale at age 16 after she fled her home country. Chantale also earned this recognition through her work advocating for visually impaired students like herself, as well as being a public speaker for Amnesty International and the Worcester Area Refugee Ministry.
We are blown away by Chantale's resilience and all that she has accomplished within her few years in the United States. Many thanks to all our donors who support our Unaccompanied Refugee Minors Program.
ILAP Offers Low-Fee Legal Services
In December 2019, the Immigration Legal Assistance Program expanded its low-cost legal services to include full representation in immigration court, appeals to the Board of Immigration Appeals, and US Citizenship and Immigration Services interviews (asylum, naturalization, and permanent residency). The new scope of services includes asylum seekers and unaccompanied alien children in the Greater Worcester community who do not meet funder requirements to receive pro bono (free) services.
Many who fall into the gap between free and full cost representation, who are slightly over the federal poverty guidelines and would otherwise struggle to pay a private attorney. Our low-cost program offers services for 10-20 percent of the cost of a private attorney, putting representation within reach of many.
Immigrants with attorneys are 10x more likely to establish their right to remain in the US than those without representation.
Representation can mean the difference between lawful status and deportation. In the case of asylum seekers who fled persecution, removal to the country of origin may mean the difference between life and death.
Will you donate today and help ILAP continue to represent immigrants in need of legal aid?
Immigration Legal Assistance Program (ILAP) Helps Samuel
Samuel recently received his DACA renewal and work permit renewal! Samuel came to the U.S. from El Salvador when he was a young teenager. Because of DACA, he has been able to graduate from college and obtain a graduate certificate in cybersecurity. Now he is a Cyber Security Analyst with a global consulting firm.
Samuel says, “I would like to thank ILAP and their staff for their dedicated work on my case, for keeping me updated about all of the changes to DACA over the past year, and for providing me with information about other options available for immigration relief.”
We are very proud of Samuel’s success and grateful that DACA opens doors for many others!
New Mom is Ready for Motherhood
Because of you, Asmarina is finding her voice to advocate for herself as a young adult preparing for independence and motherhood.
Asmarina is a 20-year-old young woman originally from Eritrea. She came to the United States as a refugee – having been persecuted for her religious beliefs – and was placed in a foster home by Ascentria’s Unaccompanied Refugee Minors program (URM) in 2017.
During the first few months of the COVID pandemic, Asmarina braved her first trimester of pregnancy, finished her senior year of high school remotely, and supported her community as an essential worker at a supermarket. In December of 2020, she gave birth to a beautiful baby girl!
PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS
Sometimes heroes don’t wear red capes or have the letter ‘S’ emblazoned on their chest. They don’t get all of the glory and the headlines – they just quietly show up and do the work every day.
The work of caring for the ‘least of these’ is our primary mission. Our heroes are here 365 days a year just silently and steadily doing the unglamorous work of making sure that everyone gets the care and dignity that they need and deserve. During a pandemic, these jobs take on a new level of hero – as they come at a much greater personal risk to the person and their family. But our heroes show up anyway.
Murals for Florence House
The pandemic has reminded all of us that we need to appreciate joyful moments. We are so fortunate to have these beautiful murals created by Lena McCarthy at Florence House, one of Ascentria’s teen parenting residential facilities.
Thank you, Lena, for the inspiring murals, and thank you United Way of Central Massachusetts for making this possible. Our Florence House moms and their kids will cherish this for years to come!
To learn more about Lena and her art, please visit her website www.lenamccarthyart.com/
GOOD NEWS GARAGE
Tablets Help English Language Learners
While 2021 will be an exciting time for refugee resettlement, the new Americans we work with face an ever-growing list of challenges posed by the pandemic. One challenge they face is connectivity and access to reliable tech devices, such as laptops and tablets.
We turned to our donors for help and so far you’ve helped us purchase dozens of tablets for our clients!
“The gift of tablets will enable adult English Language Learners not only to video into their English classes, but also to engage more fully and confidently in their learning by having a better visual experience. It will also encourage them to strengthen their digital skills.”
Johanna Young, Lead ESOL Teacher, SNA - New Hampshire
Donated Car Gives Family Hope
These are the faces of a family whose lives have just been changed forever. Thanks to a generous vehicle donor, they can now move forward with their lives, no longer held back by a lack of reliable transportation.
Samantha was awarded a 2009 Honda Civic on October 19. She said, “I want to personally thank you for what you’ve done for my family. You have helped put my family on the right track towards a better future, new adventures, and better education. We promise to pay it forward.”
Since 1996, Ascentria’s Good News Garage has provided over 5,000 New England families with donated vehicles, empowering clients to move out of poverty and into financial independence and social stability. Our ability to award cars is limited only by the number of cars donated.
Families need your help! Please consider passing the keys for your old or seldom-used car to a family in need and help them work toward financial independence.
Samantha and her family are able to move forward!

SNAP-Ed Continues to Reach Massachusetts Residents Despite the Pandemic
In FY 2020, Ascentria's SNAP-Ed Program reached 549 individuals across Massachusetts, despite the barriers posed by the pandemic! SNAP-Ed staff quickly shifted their outreach efforts online and offered virtual lessons and food demonstrations via Facebook. They also distributed seed kits and nutrition resource packets for recipients to grow their own food at home.
SNAP-Ed also partnered with food pantries and public schools to increase access to local food, nutrition education materials, and home gardening resources during the worst of the pandemic, when food security was a concern for many families. They were able to reach 1,521 people through this partnership.
Accomplishments
We're so happy to share that in FY 2020, two teen parents started college and three teens obtained their HiSet (formerly GED)!
These are amazing accomplishments and we cannot wait to see what the future has in store for these parents. With the start of our Transitional Coaching Program, we hope that more parents will be able to plan for career pathways, college, and trade school opportunities!

Teen Moms Will Receive the Continued Support They Need
Do you know what happens to teen moms when they turn 22? Sadly, the state funding ends and they become ineligible to access our case management services. Consequently, Ascentria’s formal state-funded relationship with the client also comes to an end.
Studies show that 20 percent of mothers and their children return to an unhoused status after their discharge from a residential service. You helped us find a way to give them the boost they need toward independence – transitional coaching.
After discharge, a transitional coach will continue to assist teen mothers for two more years to build necessary life skills and continue to mature in their ability to deal with their own life’s challenges.
In addition to the coaching support, financial assistance in the form of a tapering subsidy will be provided including cash support for rent, childcare, transportation, education, and training.
We are very excited that our innovative transitional coaching pilot program will launch this year.
This is a privately funded program that has become a reality because of the generosity of donors.

Foster Care Youth Receive Help As They Move Into Their First Apartments
Last year, you helped our clients in a unique way. Instead of making a monetary donation, donors helped three teens in foster care prepare to move to their own apartments by purchasing household items.
Through Amazon Smile, you purchased 92 items valued at $1,783 for our clients! Everything from dish sets to towels to bed pillows. Additionally, your generosity raised $1,030 in funds.
Our supportive donors helped these young adults take the next step in their journey. Thank you and join us in wishing Alex, Olivia, and Vivienne the best of luck in their new homes!
The audited financial statements of Ascentria Care Alliance represent the activity of the parent organization and its thirteen wholly owned subsidiaries.

"I know that for many people, having a car is what determines whether you can keep your job or balance work and caring for a child or parent. We have been so fortunate, in so many ways, and we wanted to be able to give back to someone in our community. This is the second car that we have donated to GNG and I would happily do it again."

SERVICES FOR OLDER ADULTS
Donors Celebrate Luther Ridge Staff
When the pandemic mandated a no visitor policy at our assisted living facility, Luther Ridge, our staff stepped up to become the only in-person support for our seniors. Our residents’ families were so appreciative that they donated $2,634 to be used for staff activities to celebrate their commitment and dedication to their loved ones. Thank you so much for acknowledging what we witness everyday – our employees are simply the best!

The Colors in this Report
Pantone
PANTONE 17-5104 Ultimate Gray is emblematic of solid and dependable elements which are everlasting and provide a firm foundation. The colors of pebbles on the beach and natural elements whose weathered appearance highlights an ability to stand the test of time, Ultimate Gray quietly assures, encouraging feelings of composure, steadiness and resilience.
Emboldening the spirit, the pairing of PANTONE 17-5104 Ultimate Gray + PANTONE 13-0647 highlights our innate need to be seen, to be visible, to be recognized, to have our voices heard.
A combination of color whose ties to insight, innovation and intuition, and respect for wisdom, experience, and intelligence inspires regeneration, pressing us forward toward new ways of thinking and concepts. "
We wanted to include colors that are similar to the Pantone colors of the year, yellow and gray, because of the deep meanings behind those colors. They reflect our resiliency and optimism as we recover from the pandemic with your help.
"A message of happiness supported by fortitude, the combination of PANTONE 17-5104 Ultimate Gray + PANTONE 13-0647 Illuminating is aspirational and gives us hope. We need to feel that everything is going to get brighter – this is essential to the human spirit.
As people look for ways to fortify themselves with energy, clarity, and hope to overcome the continuing uncertainty, spirited and emboldening shades satisfy our quest for vitality. PANTONE 13-0647 Illuminating is a bright and cheerful yellow sparkling with vivacity, a warming yellow shade imbued with solar power.
The colors in this Annual Report are a little bit different from the colors we usually use across Ascentria, why is that?

Donors Become Heroes During End-Of-Year Appeal
During our 2020 year-end appeal, we asked you to “follow your heart” and donate to the Ascentria program which best reflects your passion to help. And follow you did!
Thanks to your incredible support, we raised $362,000 during our end-of-year fundraising efforts! You made it possible for New Englanders in need to receive vital support during the pandemic crisis and beyond. Here is some of your impact on New England communities:
And so much more! Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
